Hi guys!

I have just taken my car to the garage for a full service. The thing is recently I have noticed that when accelarating, the rev's shoot up but the car doesn't speed up and takes ages to catch up. The guy at the garage said it sounds like the clutch is gone.

2 points questions, 1) does this sound right and 2) whats a fair price for a new clutch?

Thanks!!!!:)

It does sound like clutch slip; the classic test is to drive slowly in a high gear and boot the accelerator. If it's going to slip, that is when it will do it. The revs will rise and the car will eventually catch-up. Do it enough you should get a lovely warm singeing smell in the car as well! PowerFIAT quote £450.00 for a clutch :http://www.powerfiat.co.uk/services.htm

Yes, sounds like the clutch is slipping

if you go to power fiat

ask roger about fitting a GTV clutch, they can take more stick

Yep, just had a dreaded call.............

They have confirmed its the clutch and it will cost £532 all in. Sounds about fair?

very steep, fitting costs £100 for any car at my local garage

at buypartsby.co.uk a LUK clutch kit (good quality, i've used them many times) costs betwen £50 and £150 depending on model (you didnt state which coupe you have)
http://buypartsby.co.uk/clutch_kit_display.php?txtmodel=Coupe&Submit=Next&txtmake=Fiat

so i'd say £150-250 in total is the max i'd be willing to pay for it, if you dont have a reasonably priced local garage then it may cost you double for labour, but thats still only £250-350.

get plenty of quotes to make sure you get the best price possible, i'm sure you'll be able to half your quote. £532 is a disgrace imo.

Where about do you live?

Roger at Powerfiat is and amazing shout if you're around essex ways

If you're in the midlands, speak to Paul at Motormech.

Yeah, it's a Fiat Coupe, 20V, 1997

Live in North Hertfordshire, know any good garages around there?

Thanks for all the advice!!

I think the 45 mile trip to Essex is the best idea

www.powerfiat.co.uk

or

www.torqueitalia.com

These are the guys you want to play on your coup

As utterly brilliant as the coupe specialists are and by taking it to them you know they will do the best job imaginable. At the same time though a clutch in a 20v is hardly rocket science there are other garages who will do the job with ease. just make sure you dont take it to a rubbish garage ;)

If you have a NEW clutch fitted ( none of this recon crap ), INSIST that the flywheel is skimmed to true it up & remove hard spots.

It will bed in perfect & give you 80k worth of peace of mind at least !

Also get them to replace the gearbox input oil seal, as these can sometimes leak once disturbed.

£450 all in is an ok price. Anymore is taking the ****.

Definitely recommend the journey to Rog at Powerfiat - its not that far from you and your coupe will be in safe hands. :D

Can anyone tell me why i shouldnt take my car to Mr Clutch ? They claim to have a 2 year/20,000 miles "no-quibble" guarantee on all work done. Plus they are cheaper and much nearer to me than any of the fiat specialists. Can anyone give me details of any bad experiences they may have had with mr clutch?

cheers
